Willie Nelson, a hippie-styled musician known for his beard, braided hair and bandana, has had a vital role in shaping country music and has become a timeless icon in his field. But before his hit singles, his platinum albums, his nationally recognized persona, Nelson was an unknown DJ in Fort Worth, Texas, trying to make it big. In the ‘60s he was given a chance through his songwriting, where he created national hits such as “Crazy” that was made popular by Patsy Cline. It wasn’t until the mid 1970s that his singing career took off, with the release of his album, Red-Headed Stranger, which was an immediate success. It catapulted Nelson into the ranks of country music, giving him the chance to go even further, aligning himself with Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings to create the outlaw country genre.

As a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, Nelson has spent his career producing instant hits. His signature songs include “On the Road Again,” “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys,” a duet with Jennings, and “If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time,” which was a top ten country single in 1976. He is also known for taking non-country songs and making them his own, such as Elvis Presley’s “You Were Always on My Mind” and Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind.” In 2004, Nelson released Outlaws & Angels, which featured a variety of musicians, including Merle Haggard, Ben Harper, and Los Lonely Boys. He recently sang a duet with Toby Keith in the song “Whiskey for My Men, Beer for My Horses.”

Asleep at the Wheel is an Austin, Texas-based group that has won multiple Grammy Awards for their country and western swing albums. They first formed in the 1970s out of Paw Paw, West Virginia and are best known for their single, “The Letter that Johnny Walker Read.”

Treena Parvello, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Tohono O'odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “Every time Desert Diamond Casino brings Willie Nelson to town he plays to sold out shows. We want all fans to have their chance to see him in person and that’s why we’re having him play two separate nights. Get your tickets early because they won’t be available for long!”
